Unbeaten DARING TACT won the Japanese Oaks

Daring Tact

Daring Tact has proven her favoritism and claimed the second leg of the Japanese Triple Tiara, Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) over 2400m turf at Tokyo on Sunday. She became the second unbeaten filly to win the first two legs of the filly’s classic since Miss Onward in 1957.
Breaking well from fourth position in the field of 18, the Haruki Sugiyama trainee got a few bumps. Jockey Kohei Matsuyama said: “I decided to keep her relax in the further position than planned.”
When the field rounded the final turns and headed to the home stretch, Daring Tact was still well back in the field and off the rail. Matsuyama tried to steer her to the outside but struggled to find the space and then shifted to the inside for a narrow gap. With 300meters to go, Daring Tact squeezed through the small space and then burst her power, closing with the fastest speed among the rivals and finished out for a half-length.
“I am very relieved, as I have felt a lot of pressure going into the race. I struggled to find the clear path in the stretch but once she got out of the traffic, her late burst was still extraordinary.”, said Matsuyama. The seventh favorite Win Marilyn (by Screen Hero) finished 2nd and another long shot Win Mighty (by Gold Ship) finished 3rd.
Consigned by Hasegawa Bokujo and purchased at 12,000,000yen at the 2018 JRHA Select Yearling Sale, the first crops of Epiphaneia won the maiden race (1600m) at Kyoto last November. Started off this year’s campaign with a victory in the listed-Elfin Stakes (1600m) in February, she claimed the stepping-up in the first leg of the filly’s classic, G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) on April 12 last out.

She also gave her trainer Haruki Sugiyama first classic victory. With no spectators due to the precautionary measures against COVID-19 taken by the Japan Racing Association, Oka Sho was held over rain affected turf track over 1600m at Hanshin on Sunday.

The second pick Dearing Tact raced farther under Kohei Matsuyama, while the top favorite Resistencia broke well from the wide gate and sat handily under Yutaka Take. Matsuyama guided the Epiphaneia-sired filly to outside route and urged her around the final turns. Resistencia closed to the lead Smile Kana in the top stretch and the two had a fierce battle with 200 meters to go, however Dearing Tact exploded her late speed from outside and closed with every stride for the last 100 meters and pulled away for 1.1/2-length win.
